The area of intervention is located in the northern area of the city of Avezzano, delimited by via Ferruccio Parri, and to the east by via Aldo Moro. The idea of the project starts from the natural slope of the site, and is to model the volumes of the two school complexes in harmony with the ground. It defines a sort of school-park with internal spaces for teaching and external spaces for teaching at the open air, as well as spaces that can be used by citizens to promote social cohesion, in order to link the project to the entire city of Avezzano.
The school center is in fact designed as a place for the education but also for the social cohesion ; a building that merges the ideas and needs of schools of different levels into a single design, for a free use of guests and citizens .
The idea is to combine the themes of learning with the peri-urban context of the city, creating a real agora.
The figurative matrix follows the design of the “Piana del Fucino”.
The settlement idea aims to define a double distribution axis: a first with an east-west trend (on the position of via Parri) on which the main entrance of the new all-inclusive institute is located and on which the distribution of the primary school is articulated; a second perpendicular axis, along the north-south direction, distributes the two school complexes of the primary and lower secondary schools.
The interior spaces, as well as being oriented towards criteria of permeability and maximum flexibility of use, can be configured in possible “didactic scenarios” through the use of manoeuvrable mobile partitions.
Next to the closed classrooms, there is an open-air classroom, a sort of garden, protectet and well equipped for lessons All the courtyards have a deciduous tree that can offer shelter from the sun during the summer and sunshine in the winter
The roof garden is covered with sedum and native weeds and grasses, which do not require irrigation or particular maintenance.
Objectives:
a. creation of innovative educational ambients with high acoustic lighting and thermo-hygrometric well-being performances.
b. planning of available green spaces to reach hight liveability and build relationships between schools and surrounding area.
c. permeability and flexibility of spaces
d. school as an example of eco-sustainability with the aim of sensitizing the community from childhood to conscious consumption and knowledge of renewable energies (the sun, the earth and water).
e. Main aspects of bio-architecture and eco-compatibility:
– Energy plant with zero CO2 emissions due to the total absence of combustion.
– Water management system, integrated with efficient solutions, for example with the recovery of rainwater for sanitary or irrigation uses.
– Use of wood characterized by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification.
– Choice of materials and finishes based on the LCA methodology (Life Cycle Assessment).
– Choice of components and/or equipment with low VOC emissions.
– Controlled Mechanical Ventilation, capable of ensuring an excellent level of IAQ (Indoor Air Quality).
– Use of recycled, renewable and where possible regional materials, and activation of a management and collection plan for recyclable materials;
– Intensive use of green spaces and roofs, preferring local plantings with low water requirements to minimize the bio-economic impact.
– Use of low-reflection materials for non-green roofs and floors, (SRI Index – Solar Reflective Index ≤ 29)
