If we look at the photographs of a city like Los Angeles taken a century ago we are amazed… Today the image of the city is completely different: after just a century it is a saturated city. The four great systems identified by Reyner Banham in the early Seventies in his extraordinary Los Angeles, the architecture of the four ecologies, or the beaches, the highway, the suburbs and the villas on the hills, now appear linked one to each other, necessary one to each other.

Pescara is a new city; the small fishing village became a city in the 1920s according to two orthogonal directions. The first one is perpendicular to the coast and follows the river; the second one is instead parallel to the coast and rests on it. The parallel direction is a long zoning of apartment blocks, as often happens in the Adriatic landscape.

Giovanni Vaccarini, in his Pescara, gives one of the most convincing proofs of rewriting the apartment block… he brings out the Los Angeles soul of Pescara…
